Rotary Youth Exchange

“A Rotary Youth Exchange student spends up to a year living with host families and attending school in a different country. For over 75 years, students and host families have broadened their horizons through Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs, including the Halifax Northwest Rotary Club.”

Adventures in Citizenship Program

“Each year the Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest sponsors a student attendee for the Rotary Adventures in Citizenship program.  This annual event provides a unique opportunity for some 200 high-performing senior high School students from across Canada to come together in the nation’s capital for a four day visit in order to gain a better understanding of this country and how it works.  Through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and others, they learn about the workings of Canada’s democratic institutions. And by meeting with one another, and having discussions among themselves as new friends, they learn to appreciate the uniqueness and diversity of Canada, and the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.”

Beneficiaries

Breakfast Program at Chebucto Heights Elementary School

Rotarians and their friends have volunteered at Chebucto Heights School the past four years making and serving breakfast for 15-20 children every morning before classes. According to Nutrition Explorations, students who ate breakfast before school were more likely to receive better test scores and grades compared to the students who did not have breakfast. They were also less likely to make errors on tests and more likely to comprehend what was learned in the classroom. Using breakfast food as fuel enables students to think more clearly, become more alert for the demands of school and remain energized throughout the day.

The Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest wants to continue to be of service to these children and their families by preparing and serving breakfast before school each day by replacing the financial support previously provided to allow this opportunity for service to continue.

The Phoenix Choir

Phoenix Youth Programs is a not-for-profit community organization in HRM committed to assisting youth at risk between the ages of 12 and 24. Two years ago it launched an exciting project involving the formation of a choir.

The objectives of the choir are to provide, through singing, an opportunity for youth under stress to strengthen self--esteem and build friendships. In a quite short timescale the choir membership has built great pride in its accomplishments and has developed a loyal and enthusiastic following.

The Choir is now a 40 member group comprised of Phoenix youth, staff and community members. The Choir was formed in September 2011and has, in its short life given several concerts and featured on CBC’s The National, and local radio and TV stations

The Rotary Club of Halifax Northwest is proud to have been involved since the beginning in supporting Phoenix, both financially and non-financially, in forming and developing this choir, and plans to continue supporting this exciting initiative.
